Citizens' Initiatives
A European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) is the EU's tool of direct democracy. If an initiative collects 1 million signatures from EU citizens across at least 7 member states within a year, the European Commission must formally examine it and respond in public. It's one of the few ways ordinary people can put an issue directly on the EU's agenda.
